When I was volunteering in West Philadelphia, I came across a sign that reminded me of a jarring public art piece, but yet it was not a metaphor. It was real. The lot where the school I volunteer at also has a church located on it. There was a massive sign that read, “Massive renovation of _____ Church.” Some of the additions included a movie theatre, gym, and other extravagant amenities. However, when I read a little closer, the sign read “Renovations to come in 2006.” It is 2017 as all of you know. The dilapidated lot that I was so familiar with was never renovated. This massive sign served as a sort of art piece for myself, reminding me of the dreams and visions many have a better tomorrow, but how that does not always unfold as planned.
