Art in Ad Places is a campaign created by Brooklyn-based artists Caroline Caldwell and RJ Rushmore to replace ads in NYC with art pieces. In an interview explaining their motivation, Caldwell said, “The cornerstone of this project is the idea that public space is shared by everybody but only a few rich corporations decide what messages…

Crosswalk Art
This is a crosswalk in Baltimore painted to look like a zipper. I really enjoyed this public installation because it transforms an everyday object/occurrence into a creative piece of art using elements that are normally there (the lines).
Love Has No Labels Video
The Ad Council set up the “Love Has No Labels” public installation in my hometown of Santa Monica. It was a beautiful display love of all kinds, where people danced, kissed, and hugged behind an x-ray screen. The goal was to have the audience rethink our biases, and the message was that love is love, which I…
Folded Skull
This skull was featured in an installation called “FOLDS” by David Mesguich and Valentin Van der Meulen. They created the skull using polypropylene and while it is not made of paper, lots of the structural components are similar to the folded paper structures we have created in class.
Pixar
Over the break I visited the “Science Behind Pixar” exhibit at the California Science Center. It was amazing to see how Pixar films are created, from the concept art to modeling to lighting. The image is a piece of concept art for Up, which I particularly enjoyed because of the color scheme as well as the way our…
Christoph Niemann
I recently started watching a documentary series on Netflix called Abstract, which profiles artists/designers. The first episode featured Christoph Niemann, an illustrator who has been featured on the cover of The New Yorker 22 times. Some of my favorite works of his however, are the ones he makes with everyday items. He takes these items and gives…
Kubo
During winter break, I saw an exhibit for the stop-motion animation studio Laika. They displayed a collection of the real pieces they used for movies like Kubo and the Two Strings, and it made me truly appreciate the immense amount of work that goes into stop-motion animation. The boat shown was breathtakingly beautiful, especially because it was completely…
Jinxy Jenkins & Lucky Lou
I came across this animated short this week and thought the story was very charming. The characters don’t speak at all, but their facial expressions and actions, combined with the sound effects and music, create a playful atmosphere.
Fans
Rebecca Mock is an illustrator who creates GIFs that often have subtle movements. In this GIF, the only two items moving are the ceiling fan and the fan on the chair (which is harder to notice). The continuous loop of the fan is very effective and because the fans are only two objects with movement,…
Intervention
Over the winter break, I visited MOCA in LA and saw this piece named Intervention painted by Edward Krasiński. I found it intriguing because while the seven paintings could be separate pieces, the blue line creates a narrative between them. Additionally, the one painting that lies on a separate layer alters the composition and shows how…
Melting Penguin
I came across this graphic from the WWF promoting awareness about climate change. Its simplicity communicates the point effectively. Like the signs from Project 1.2, the color helps to set a tone for the piece, and in this case, the blood red represents danger and imminent threat for penguins and the environment.
Up&Up
Coldplay’s music video for their song Up&Up features stunning visual effects. A lot of the composite footage combined objects that shared shapes, colors, or textures, even though their sizes or contexts weren’t quite as similar. The video also played with dichotomies such as up vs. down, ground vs. sky, and nature vs. urban landscapes. I think that…
