Natural Public Art

I recently read about an artist named Bryant Chase who uses rocks, driftwood, and other objects he finds in nature and turns them into intricate pieces of public art. I thought his pieces were really interesting because they were taking something natural and creating very unnatural positions, like the precariously balanced sculpture shown in this…

Art in Ad Places

Art in Ad Places is a campaign created by Brooklyn-based artists Caroline Caldwell and RJ Rushmore to replace ads in NYC with art pieces. In an interview explaining their motivation, Caldwell said, “The cornerstone of this project is the idea that public space is shared by everybody but only a few rich corporations decide what messages…

Mutter Museum

Visiting the Mutter Museum was the highlight of my week. I have wanted to go since freshman year and only now got around to crossing it off my Penn bucket list. The intersection between anatomy and art is something I have explored before and that I am really interested in, so this museum was perfect…

Longwood Gardens

Over the weekend, my family visited me (again) and took me to Longwood Gardens! I hadn’t been since I was really young. This time, I actually appreciated and was blown away by the HUGE variety and sheer amount of flowers and plants that they grow and maintain. The featured image looks like a bird –…

Rittenhouse.

Rittenhouse Square could be my favorite park I have been to. Being from Arizona, I know my fair share of parks. Yet parks serve a very different purpose there. In Arizona, a park only has success based on its amenities: how many swing sets, the quality of the basketball court, etc. Rittenhouse serves a much…

Persona

The Persona series revolve around story telling about a group of characters brought into an other world. The stylization of the Persona games have steadily begun to infuse into the game to the point there is no trace of the console/platform in the game. The style becomes truly the games own.   Persona 3 Persona…

Tomer Hanuka

Tomer Hanuka was one of the featured artists this week on booooooom.com. He’s an illustrator and cartoonist (or as his website says “comics artist”) who’s created work for clients such as Sony, GQ, and Nike. I was really amazed by some of his work that was a depiction of different lifestyles and realities as well as…

A Giant Example of Public Art

I find public art to be very fascinating, but I especially like this piece of art that has refused to limit itself to one destination. This giant red ball has traveled the globe and has impacted the public space in tons of different areas. I think that is an interesting point when thinking about public…

Alexander Calder

I recently learned about an artists named Alexander Calder, and I thought his story and artwork was really interesting. He started off as an engineer studying mechanical engineering and applied kinetics, and he then became an artist. Because of his background in engineering and mechanics, he ended up making some really interesting physical structures, especially…

Crosswalk Art

This is a crosswalk in Baltimore painted to look like a zipper. I really enjoyed this public installation because it transforms an everyday object/occurrence into a creative piece of art using elements that are normally there (the lines).

This Art is Bananas!

Artist Stephan Brusche is known for using an interesting medium for his art: bananas. Using deconstructed bananas and their peels, Brusche is able to recreate some of the world’s most notable works, including da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” and Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam.”

Amusing Signs

After listening to the public art lecture in class, I found more of Michael Pederson’s work online and found his artwork very amusing. I especially found these small signs interesting because it captures three daydreams that people do commonly have and are often the subject of movies and other creative media. I think it shows…
